Whether you believe in this Chinese tradition or not, the energies of Ghost Month is here. In 2013, the ghost month commences on August 7 and ends on September 4, 2013.

Ghost month is being observed during the 7th lunar month in the traditional Chinese calendar, which they believe the “gates of hell” are open during this period to allow ghost and spirits to visit the world of the living.

The spirits of the dead visit their families, feasting and hunt their victims usually those they can possess.

There are three important days during ghost month:

– the first day which is on August 7, where in the departed ancestors and the rest of the dead relatives are being offered with food, incense and ghost money;

– the second day (the most important day), is the 15th day of the ghost month (August 20-21) which is the celebration of the Ghost Festival commonly known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, wherein the spirits of the dead are in ‘high gear’ the very reason during this day, the dead should be given importance by giving them sumptuous feast to please them and brigh luck to the family. Ceremonies are performed during this day to ease the sufferings of the ghosts.

-the third day which is the last day of the Ghost Month, wherein the Taoist/Bhuddist priests perform ceremonies, calling all ghosts and spirits and inform them “it’s time to return and close/seal the ‘gates of hell’ .”

Keep in mind that ghost month is also called the ‘inauspicious month’ which means a bad time to do activities such as evening strolls, traveling, moving house, or starting a new business. Many people avoid swimming during ghost month, since there are many spirits in the water which can try to drown you.
