Ghost Month: Remembering the Departed Souls

It’s Ghost Festival Day, today, September 2, the peak of Ghost Month where souls of the departed roam on the surface of the Earth.

In Buddhist and Taoist tradition, it is believed that the gates of hell are open during ghost month which is the seventh lunar month – this year, the ghost month also known as Hungry Ghost Month is from August 19 to September 16, 2020. And today is the Hungry Ghost Day.

During the ghost festival day, families should offer food sacrifices to their dead relatives to make them happy and in return give them good luck for their earthly life.

There are do’s and don’ts during Ghost Month, don’t go outside late at night, avoid swimming because water can be the gate of the other side, don’t wear colors that attract ghosts like red, black, brown and navy blue; avoid signing new contracts, new job, house construction, major medical operation and big purchases.

Now I suggest during ghost month especially ghost festival day, let’s welcome and offer food for our departed relatives, pray for their souls to ascend for eternal happiness.
