Though it took ten years of consistent attempt to contact the spirit through seances of the great magician Harry Houdini, finally in the Halloween night on October 31, 1936 Houdini’s wife Bess officially announced “Houdini did not come through,” she said. “My last hope is gone. I do not believe that Houdini can come back to me, or to anyone…The Houdini Shrine has burned for ten years. I now, reverently… turn out the light. It is finished. Good night, Harry!”
The seances to contact the spirit of Houdini, the famed magician and escape artist, started on October 31, 1927 to prove the existence of the afterlife but after all the effort and hopes, Houdini did not show up and his message did not come.
The Houdini séance has been a Halloween tradition since the first anniversary of his death. The magician died at the age of 52 on October 31, 1926 from peritonitis – an internal infection – as the result of a ruptured appendix.
Shortly before his death, Houdini made a pact with Bess that if he could, he would return and make contact with her from the other side. They devised a coded message that only he and Bess knew; this would prove that it really was Houdini breaking through from the afterlife. But after 10 séances in 10 years, Bess had not received her beloved husband’s personal message.
Now the tradition continues and there are groups of seances persistently trying to contact the spirit of Harry, though IMHO it should not be done by those who are not familiar with Houdini especially the coded message between the magician and his wife Bess.
In the first place, I discourage people do seances or ways of contacting spirits of the dead using tools like Ouija board, spirit of the glass, coin and other kinds of mediumship because it could lead to disaster to those involved in the seances sessions.
Let’s give the dead the peace they deserve especially if they chose not to communicate with the living. If they want to, they will contact their close relatives at will maybe in dreams or wake state depending on whatever signs they could project such as the scent of the perfume or flowers, lighted candle, or apparition.
